Raising 100K Voices

Over 100,000 15-24 year olds live in Monroe County and currently face the transition of leaving their childhood homes and schools to become successful and independent adults.  Raising 100,000 Voices is a project where 100 local adolescents and young adults receive digital video cameras to learn photography and to document topics of relevance to them as they emerge into adulthood in their community.

The, “What If” video was created by 6 young people in the Career Vision program at ABVI-Goodwill.  They wanted to convey a message to their sighted peers, giving them a glimpse of what life is like from the perspective of a young person who is visually impaired.  They wanted to remind their peers that all of them have challenges and obstacles to success that they must overcome, sighted or not.  The participants produced all of the ideas and raw materials.  They really enjoyed the creative process.  It helped them to express some of their frustrations in a fun, imaginative way.
