ABVI-Goodwill Among Local Recipients Of Upstate Regional Blueprint Funding

Rochester, NY (January 11) — The Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ABVI)-Goodwill Industries of Greater Rochester, Inc. is pleased to announce that it is among seven projects in the Finger Lakes region to be awarded funding through the Empire State Development Upstate Regional Blueprint Fund.  ABVI-Goodwill will receive $500,000 in support to continue Phase II of its Centennial Campus expansion.

Empire State Development (ESD) Chairman and CEO designate, Dennis M. Mullen, said, “The Upstate Regional Blueprint Fund responds to the unique challenges faced in our Upstate economy, specifically focusing on projects that promote downtown development, business advancement and job creation. ABVI-Goodwill’s Centennial Campus project was of significant importance because they capture all three of the areas that the Blueprint Fund was established to promote.  Additionally, the Fund is especially tailored to ensure that local businesses, like ABVI-Goodwill, have the necessary assistance and available resources in order to grow and thrive in Upstate, in order to solidify their future right here in New York State.”

ABVI-Goodwill’s Centennial Campus project is part of the organization’s major expansion plan and strategic future vision.  The project totals $9 million and is designed to enhance the agency's ability to continue to deliver on its almost 100-year-old mission of providing programs, services and jobs to people who are blind or visually impaired as it moves into its next century of service.

“We are very grateful to Empire State Development for their recognition of the value and importance of this project to the agency and to the Greater Rochester community,” said A. Gidget Hopf, Ed.D., president and chief executive officer at ABVI-Goodwill.  “Just as our founders had the foresight to imagine the possibilities in the early 1900s, we, too, aspire to secure a future of opportunity and hope for those who are blind or visually impaired.  This project, complete with expanded space, new and innovative programs, state-of-the art technology, caring and compassionate staff, and new and challenging career opportunities for people who are blind or visually impaired, will be a world class facility and a lasting tribute to the love and generosity of those in our community who make it all possible.”

The Upstate Regional Blueprint Fund will support the construction and ability to equip a two-story addition to the main campus on South Clinton Avenue in Rochester, New York which will house expanded vision rehabilitation programs, career and training services, children and family services, including an after-school program, and a leadership and learning institute.  The project will add 20 new employees at the agency’s downtown location and a total of up to 60 new jobs through the region.  ABVI-Goodwill is the only not-for-profit agency in the Finger Lakes Region to be awarded funding through this round of the ESD Upstate Regional Blueprint Fund.
